International biennial exhibitions pose enormous challenges for curators--vast scales, time pressures, budgets, logistics--who also are expected to conceive cogent presentations that respond sensitively and meaningfully to the concerns of the day--artistic, political, social, ecological, etc.--in the localities where they take place as well as to a broader international audience.
