Vojtěch Kovařík + Picnic Curatorial Projects: Miguel Sbatida, Future Reefs
6:00 - 10:00 pm
In this edition of the unofficial art fair kick-off party, The Power Station opens two new exhibitions; Vojtěch Kovařík (organized by Rob Teeters), and Miguel Sbatida, Future Reefs, (organized by Picnic Curatorial Projects). For Czech artist, Vojtěch Kovařík, iconography, and mythology are fundamental to his work. His large-format, forceful, and vividly colored compositions result in impactful paintings that evoke the strength of sculpture. Figures from Greek mythology, as well as pop culture references, appear in Kovařík’s paintings, fully embracing figuration. His interest in Greek mythology comes from its importance in the European cultural collective unconscious but subverts its meaning by reconstructing its most prominent characters. For Miguel Sbatida (b. Madrid, Spain) Future Reefs is the latest chapter in an ongoing research project connected to the postnatural ecologies of coral reefs, and the sophisticated technologies being implemented at oceanic restoration sites, to accelerate the coral’s adaptation to the changing climate. The exhibition looks closely at the technique of acoustic enrichment, through a series of sculptural sound-based works that invite the viewer to experience the language of coral creatures and the fading voice of a soundscape predicted to disappear within the next century
